Chicago skyline in daylight, one of the US data centre markets covered by our IT field engineers

Plenty of UK and European service providers win contracts that include sites in the United States. The customer expects the same service in Dallas as in Dublin, but your engineers are thousands of miles away and several time zones behind. This guide explains how to source IT field engineers in the USA through a white label partner, and what UK teams should plan for.

For our coverage summary, see the IT field engineers in the USA page. All jobs are coordinated from our London desk, which helps UK teams work in their own business hours and their own language.

The main US data centre markets

Northern Virginia

Northern Virginia, centred on Ashburn and Loudoun County, is the largest data centre market in the world. Most cloud and colocation providers have major capacity here, so it is often the busiest location on any US smart hands contract.

Dallas–Fort Worth

Dallas–Fort Worth is one of the largest markets in the central USA, with a dense cluster of colocation sites and enterprise data centres. Central location and relatively low costs have made it a popular choice for primary and recovery sites.

Chicago

Chicago is the main hub for the Midwest and an important interconnection point, with strong links to the financial sector. Downtown carrier hotels and suburban campuses both generate steady field work.

Silicon Valley

Silicon Valley, especially Santa Clara and San Jose, is the main market on the West Coast for technology companies. Space and power are tight, so expect busy loading bays and strict scheduling.

Other US cities

We also see regular requests in New York and northern New Jersey, Atlanta, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Seattle, Denver and Boston, along with office and retail sites in smaller towns.

Time zones and scheduling

The continental USA spans four main time zones: Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific. London is normally five hours ahead of New York and Virginia, six ahead of Dallas and Chicago, and eight ahead of California.

The USA and UK change their clocks on different dates in spring and autumn, so for a few weeks each year the gap shrinks by an hour. Always confirm bookings in both site local time and UK time to avoid a missed window.

In practice, East Coast mornings overlap with the UK afternoon, which suits live remote support from a UK NOC. West Coast work often lands in the UK evening, so plan out-of-hours cover for your own remote engineers if they need to be on the call.

Parts and shipping

Shipping parts from the UK to the USA is slower than many teams expect. Customs clearance, commercial invoices and possible duties all add time. Our advice:

  • Use US vendor depots and advance replacement wherever the manufacturer offers it
  • Hold a small spares pool in the USA for kit without local vendor support
  • Ship to the data centre loading bay or the engineer with your ticket reference on the label
  • Check the site’s delivery acceptance rules; some will refuse unannounced deliveries

Remember that US sites use 120V power and NEMA sockets at the desk, while data centre racks generally use the same IEC connectors as in Europe. Ship the right power leads with any end-user equipment.

Practical points for UK teams

Access and paperwork

US data centres expect pre-registration and government photo ID. Some sites require proof of insurance before a new partner can work on the floor, so raise this early with the operator.

Holidays

Plan around US public holidays such as Independence Day on 4 July and Thanksgiving in late November, when many customer contacts are away. UK bank holidays do not apply on US sites.

Distance

The USA is large. A single engineer cannot cover a whole state the way they might cover a UK county. Agree response targets per site, with remote locations set as next business day or scheduled visits.

Frequently asked questions

Which US cities and data centre markets do you cover?

We cover the main markets including Northern Virginia, Dallas, Chicago, Silicon Valley, New York and New Jersey, Atlanta, Phoenix, Los Angeles and Seattle, plus office and branch locations across the country.

How do you handle the time difference between the UK and the USA?

Our service desk runs 24/7 and is coordinated from London, so US requests are picked up in any time zone. We schedule planned work in the site local time and confirm UK times on every booking.

Should we ship spare parts from the UK to US sites?

Usually not. Customs clearance and duties add delay and cost. Where possible, use US vendor depots or advance replacement, or hold a small spares pool in the USA.

Can your US engineers work under our brand?

Yes. Our service is white label. Engineers attend as your field resource, use your paperwork and follow your escalation process.

Other countries we cover: Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Japan and Australia.
