Saudi Arabia is the largest economy in the Gulf and one of the fastest-growing markets for IT infrastructure. Large investment programmes, new data centres and the relocation of regional headquarters to Riyadh have all increased demand for onsite engineers.

It is also a country where distance, the working week and site procedures differ sharply from Europe. This guide is for vendor managers, global service delivery managers and dispatch teams at UK and US service companies sourcing IT field engineers in Saudi Arabia. For our coverage summary, see the IT field engineers in Saudi Arabia page.

Where onsite IT work in Saudi Arabia is concentrated

Field engineers in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam

  • Riyadh, the capital, is the centre of government, finance and corporate headquarters. The King Abdullah Financial District and the city’s business corridors generate office IMAC, network and data centre work, and much of the country’s new data centre capacity is being built in and around Riyadh.
  • Jeddah, on the Red Sea coast, is the main commercial city of the west and a landing point for international subsea cables. Expect retail, logistics, hospitality and colocation work.
  • Dammam, together with Khobar and Dhahran in the Eastern Province, is the hub of the energy sector, with industrial sites, offices and supporting data centres.

Other Saudi cities and regions

Site lists often also include Medina, Jubail, Yanbu, Tabuk, Abha, Taif, Buraidah and Hail. Mecca appears on some retail and hospitality contracts, but only Muslims may enter the city, so assignments there must be planned with that rule in mind.

Distances and travel

Saudi Arabia is very large. Riyadh to Jeddah is around 950 km by road, so engineers travel between them by air, typically a flight of under two hours. Riyadh to Dammam is roughly 400 km, which is around four hours by road, and there is a rail service between the two cities. In the west, the Haramain high-speed railway connects Jeddah with Mecca and Medina.

This is why local presence matters. A 4-hour SLA in Jeddah has to be met by an engineer in Jeddah, not one flying in from Riyadh. We match jobs to engineers near each city and agree realistic response windows for remote sites.

How Saudi sites operate

Working week

The working week runs Sunday to Thursday, with Friday and Saturday as the weekend. For UK and US teams this creates a shorter overlap: Friday in London is a weekend day in Riyadh, and Sunday is a normal working day there. Saudi Arabia is two or three hours ahead of the UK depending on the season. Plan change windows and escalation contacts around this.

Prayer times, Ramadan and climate

Daily prayer times can briefly pause activity, and some shops and offices close during them. During Ramadan, working hours are shorter and often shift later in the day. Summer heat is extreme, and outdoor work is restricted during the hottest hours in summer months, so rooftop and external cabling jobs are best scheduled early in the day or in the cooler season.

Site access and security

Government-related, energy and financial sites often require security clearance or gate passes arranged in advance, sometimes with several days of lead time. Expect ID checks, approved contractor lists and escorted access. Data centres follow similar procedures. Share the end customer’s access process with the job so that lead times are factored into the SLA.

Data protection

Saudi Arabia has a Personal Data Protection Law, and many organisations apply strict rules on where data and storage media can go. State clearly in the work order whether failed drives may leave site or must be retained or destroyed locally.

Language

Arabic is the official language. English is widely used in business, especially in multinational offices and data centres, but forms and signage are often in Arabic. Tell us if a site needs Arabic-speaking support.
