The Netherlands is one of the easiest countries in Europe to deliver onsite IT work in. Distances are short, English is widely spoken and Amsterdam is one of the continent’s most important data centre markets. That does not mean dispatch runs itself. Parking, building access and data centre procedures all need planning.

This guide is for vendor managers, dispatch coordinators and project managers at UK and US service companies sourcing IT field engineers in the Netherlands. For our service summary, see the IT field engineers in the Netherlands page.

Where the work is in the Netherlands

Smart hands in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht

  • Amsterdam, the capital, is home to AMS-IX, one of the largest internet exchanges in the world. Data centres cluster around Amsterdam Science Park, the south-east of the city and the Schiphol and Haarlemmermeer area. Smart hands, rack and stack and hardware replacement make up much of the demand.
  • Rotterdam has Europe’s largest port, so logistics, warehousing and industrial sites generate network, Wi-Fi and break-fix work.
  • The Hague is the seat of government and hosts international organisations, with strict access and security procedures.
  • Utrecht sits at the centre of the rail network and has many corporate offices.

Other Dutch cities to include in coverage

Contracts often also list Eindhoven, the technology hub of the south, plus Groningen, Almere, Arnhem, Nijmegen, Tilburg and Breda. Almere and Haarlem are also within easy reach of Amsterdam for daily work.

Distances and getting to site

Most major Dutch cities are within an hour or two of each other. Amsterdam to Rotterdam takes about an hour by train, and Amsterdam to Utrecht less than that. Groningen and Maastricht, at the far north and south, are the longest journeys from the Randstad, at around two to two and a half hours.

Driving into city centres is the bigger challenge. Amsterdam in particular has limited, expensive parking and narrow streets, and several Dutch cities operate low-emission zones. Engineers often travel by public transport or bicycle for desk-side work, and bring a vehicle only when carrying equipment. Tell us if a job involves heavy hardware so we can plan the right transport and loading access.

Cross-border rollouts

The Netherlands also suits programmes that span neighbouring countries. Antwerp and Brussels in Belgium, and Düsseldorf and Cologne in Germany, are a few hours by road from the Randstad. That helps when a rollout covers the Benelux and western Germany, although for SLA-bound work we still assign engineers who are local to each country rather than sending one person across borders.

How Dutch sites operate

Working week

The working week is Monday to Friday. Part-time working is very common in the Netherlands, so your site contact may only be in the office on certain days. Always confirm who will meet the engineer, and have a backup contact.

Language

English proficiency is high and most site staff are comfortable working in English. Signage, safety rules and building forms are usually in Dutch. Our engineers handle both, and all updates to your team are in English.

Data centre access

Amsterdam data centres generally require access requests submitted ahead of the visit, with the engineer’s name and ID details. Many sites ask for ID on arrival and may hold it at the security desk. New data centre development around Amsterdam has faced planning and power constraints in recent years, so many customers are expanding in existing facilities, which means more work in live, busy halls. Clear method statements help.

Before you raise a job

  2. Confirm parking or loading access, especially in central Amsterdam.
  3. Submit data centre access requests early.
  4. Name a site contact and a backup, given how common part-time hours are.
  5. List the closure evidence you need.
